Matarbari Deep Sea Port Aims to End Dependence on Foreign Transshipment

Matarbari Deep Sea Port, located in Cox’s Bazar about *350 kilometers southeast of Dhaka, is a key infrastructure project designed to reduce Bangladesh’s reliance on foreign transshipment ports and boost trade efficiency. Implemented in two major phases by the Chittagong Port Authority and Roads and Highways Department, the first phase will include a *760-meter terminal with a *460-meter container jetty and a *300-meter multipurpose jetty. The port will handle vessels up to 350 meters long and *8,200 TEUs far surpassing the current capacity of Chattogram Port. Once operational, it will reduce trade costs and time, ease congestion, and allow direct shipping routes to Europe and the US. As part of the fast-track “Moheshkhali-Matarbari Infrastructure Development Initiative,” the port is expected to be fully completed by 2041, ultimately transforming the region into a major commercial, industrial, and energy hub.
