A MILESTONE IN BANGLADESH’S INFRASTRUCTURE: First Under-River Tunnel in South Asia
The Karnaphuli Tunnel is Bangladesh’s first under-river tunnel, stretching approximately *3.32 km beneath the Karnaphuli River with about* 5.35 km of approach roads, linking Chattogram Port to Anwara Upazila. Its design, construction, and operation are pivotal in strengthening Chattogram as a commercial and logistics gateway, easing urban congestion, and fostering regional growth. The tunnel enables uninterrupted connectivity between industrial zones on both sides of the river, cutting travel time significantly. It also serves as a vital component of the Asian Highway Network (AH1), enhancing cross-border trade routes and supporting Bangladesh’s long-term infrastructure vision.
