Matarbari Ultra Super Critical Coal-Fired Power Plant Boosts National Power Generation Capacity
The Matarbari Ultra Super Critical Coal-Fired Power Plant a *1,200 MW ultra-supercritical facility in Cox’s Bazar, is one of Bangladesh’s most ambitious power projects, built with Japanese technology and financing. Construction involved massive infrastructure works, including a deep-sea coal port, jetty, and transmission lines, ensuring uninterrupted coal supply and grid connectivity. Despite challenges and cost escalations, the plant represents a milestone in modern engineering with advanced boilers and turbines designed for higher efficiency and lower emissions compared to conventional coal plants. Once fully operational, it is expected to supply stable electricity to millions of households and industries, reduce reliance on costly oil-based generation, and support Bangladesh’s growing energy demand. Additionally, the port and related infrastructure developed alongside the plant are set to boost trade and connectivity, making Matarbari not just a power hub but also a catalyst for regional economic growth.
